About Airport

London attracts so many visitors from around the world that it needs to have five airports to accommodate them all. What follows is a brief overview of each of those airports and details of how you can travel between them and Central London.

Heathrow Airport – The majority of visitors to the UK fly into one of Heathrow’s 5 terminals. The airport accommodates 90 individual airlines that fly in from over 170 major airports worldwide; making it is busiest for international travelers. Traveling into the city from Heathrow is quick and simple with the London Underground being on site. The journey is just short of 22km, it takes approximately 50 minutes and costs around $6.

Gatwick Airport – Second only to Heathrow, Gatwick can be found 45km to the south of London’s centre. Better known for its frequent charter and discount flights, Gatwick is highly popular and as such it is well connected to London. By bus the journey takes an average of 90 minutes however trains regularly run from Gatwick to London Victoria as well.

Stansted Airport – Although not as big as the major airports Stansted caters for a range of budget airlines, a fact that makes it a popular choice for tourists. The airport is located nearly 50km NE of London’s centre but the variety of transport links make commuting easy. Terravision, Stansted Bus and easyBus are reliable methods of travel into London with Marble Arch, Baker Street and Victoria Station being popular destinations.

Luton Airport – This small airport operates a single runway for the use of budget airlines traveling to and from European destinations. Located in the county of Bedfordshire 55km north of London, Luton Airport takes a while to get to and there may be more than one bus journey needed depending on your starting point. There are several round the clock bus services to and from London though, mostly run by Green Line and easyBus.

London City Airport – Although this small inner-city airport only offers a single runway it is highly popular with business travelers destined for the financial district of London. Located close to Canary Wharf the London City Airport is just 11km from the city centre and is well connected via the Docklands Light Railway and a plethora of bus services. It is worth mentioning that planes landing here must be able to perform short take-offs and equally short landings.

Alternatives to the 5 London Airports include the centrally located Birmingham Airport and Manchester Airport to the north. Both of these large international airports have very good transport links to London and the rest of the UK, meaning you can be anywhere within the country with just a few hours traveling.
