Airport unveils improvement plan

Aberdeen airport has announced multi-million pound investment plans to improve its terminal building.

The airport said the project will improve passenger facilities and provide more capacity.

It plans to spend £4.25 million on capital projects this year, with £45 million earmarked in total through to 2021, and plans also include the start of a £5 million major expansion of the airport’s international arrivals area, which is set to be carried out between now and 2019.

There is also a two-year £3 million plan to boost capacity within the terminal and expand the security search area, and the opening of a £750,000 car rental facility.

Passenger numbers were up by 11.5% in 2011, according to latest provisional figures from the CAA.

It was the fastest-growing airport in the UK last year, among airports which handle more than 500,000 passengers annually.

Airport managing director Derek Provan said: “Our aim is to continue to provide high standards of service. To achieve this, we plan to increase our capacity to take account of forecast passenger growth and modernise our facilities to deliver a better service to passengers, airlines and other airport users.

“Aberdeen airport has enjoyed sustained growth over the past 12 months and our longer-term forecasts suggest that this trend will continue. It is vital that we continue to invest in our facilities to create an airport that befits Aberdeen’s status as the energy capital of Europe.”

The details of the capital investment plan are now subject to a consultation with airlines and other airport partners. More than £50 million has been invested in Aberdeen airport over the past five years, including £10 million on a 124-metre runway extension.

Aberdeen airport is due to publish its revised “master plan” at the end of February, which will set out the future development framework for the airport up to 2040.
