LONDON (Reuters) - The owners of Bristol Airport may have to stump up some cash to help with the refinancing of 515 million pounds ($814 million) of debt which falls due next year, banking sources said on Friday. The western England airport, owned 50 percent by Macquarie's European Infrastructure Fund 1 and 49 percent by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (OTPP), with Sydney Airport holding the remaining 1 percent, has started talks with lenders but the level of debt relative to earnings makes it too risky for banks to agree a straightforward loan extension or refinancing, the sources said. Credit Agricole, Societe Generale, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and HSH Nordbank were among the banks that refinanced Bristol Airport's debt in 2005, according to Thomson Reuters LPC data.

BERLIN (AP) — The opening of Berlin's new €2.5-billion ($3.18-billion) airport must be further delayed until spring of next year, the capital's mayor said Thursday, in a growing embarrassment for city officials. The airport's planned June 3 opening was canceled at the last minute last week over unresolved fire safety issues but officials then said it could likely be opened this August. But in an about-face, Mayor Klaus Wowereit said the airport's board has now set March 17, 2013, as the new opening date.

JUBA (Reuters) - South Sudan will soon acquire anti-aircraft missiles to defend its territory against air attacks it says are frequently carried out by warplanes from neighbouring Sudan, the South Sudanese military said on Wednesday. Since South Sudan became the world's newest independent nation in July last year, its government has accused northern neighbour Sudan of continuing aerial bombing raids on South Sudanese territory, a charge routinely denied by Khartoum. Foreign reporters in South Sudan have witnessed bombings by Sudanese warplanes of targets including a market, a refugee camp and oil infrastructure, and border skirmishes between the two countries' armies last month included a series of air raids by the northern nation

Most people think of flying as faster but more expensive than driving. But an unusual aircraft project that competed in NASA's 2011 Green Flight Challenge is promising something new — a personal airplane with better fuel economy than many family cars. The "Synergy" aircraft could carry up to five people with a fuel efficiency of 40 miles per gallon, according to an online posting at the Experimental Aircraft Association website.
