When a three-year old looks up at you with those wide, adoring eyes it’s hard to resist their every whim. Toddlers are some of cutest kids in the world, but they also have the potential to be incredibly unpredictable and stubborn. This can make traveling with them difficult. Fortunately, there are several things you can do as a parent to make traveling by plane more comfortable for you and your toddler.
If you’re still using the stroller for your toddler, one of the most important things to do is to keep it as long as possible. Do not surrender that precious piece of equipment until you are boarding the flight. Then, and only then, can you hand it over to be checked underneath. If you check your stroller at the ticket counter you wear out your back by carry your toddler all the way through security, to the gate, and finally through the long line to board the plane. Also, if your flight is delayed, or moved to a different gate you will wish you had that stroller handy.
Always be sure to take an extra change of clothes in case the toddler gets motion sick or has a diaper leak. Traveling with toddlers can bring out the worst in any of them. If things go badly, you don’t want to end up smelling like a stinky diaper for the rest of the journey. You’ll also want to bring some bags to put any reeking or dirty clothes in so they don’t stink up your entire bag.
Something you can do for your toddler to help sooth them is to take a stuffed animal or comfort blanket. In addition, you are going to need some toys or games to keep them entertained for those long flights or waits in the airport. Be sure to take hand sanitizer and wet ones for cleaning up messes and warding off germs. Just be sure to put your hand sanitizer in a ziplock bag so you don’t have to surrender it at the security checkpoint.
Traveling with toddlers can go surprisingly well if you have a positive mindset and follow the advice listed above. Part of having a positive mindset involves avoiding worry and stress, as this can be detected by the toddler and translated into bad behavior. Things such as worrying about the security of your home, and panicking over whether or not you closed all the windows, can easily add to your stress levels. A simple home security system can help clear your mind in one area so that you can devote your attention to your child and the trip at hand.
